Size Classifications

  • Chiu / Chumono: 16–36 inches tall, “two-handed” bonsai requiring two hands to lift.
  • Omono / Dai: 30–48 inches tall, “four-handed” bonsai requiring two people to carry.
  • Hachi-uye: 40–60 inches tall, “six-handed” bonsai needing three people to transport.
  • Imperial: 60–80 inches tall, “eight-handed” bonsai named after trees in Japan’s Imperial Palace, requiring four people to move.

Notable Large Bonsai

  • Akao Herb & Rose Garden Red Pine: Located in Japan; 16 feet tall and 30 feet wide, considered one of the largest and oldest bonsai in the world.
