Calodium

Caladiums are tuberous tropical plants from South and Central America, celebrated for their vibrantly colored, heart- or arrowhead-shaped leaves in shades of green, pink, white, and red. Often called “angel wings” or “elephant ears,” they are shade-loving and low-maintenance plants grown for their decorative foliage rather than flowers. Caladiums contain calcium oxalate crystals, making them toxic if ingested by humans or animals, and they undergo a natural winter dormancy period, during which their leaves die back.

Description

Caladium

Caladiums are tropical foliage plants cherished for their vibrant, heart-shaped leaves that bring an instant splash of color to gardens and indoor spaces. Native to the rainforests of South and Central America, they grow from tubers and are prized for their ornamental foliage rather than their small, inconspicuous flowers.

Key Characteristics

  • Foliage: Large, thin, heart- or arrowhead-shaped leaves showcasing stunning mixes of green, pink, white, and red patterns.
  • Flowers: Produces small, inconspicuous blooms — the true beauty lies in its dramatic foliage.
  • Origin: Native to the tropical rainforests of South and Central America.
  • Tuberous Roots: Grows from underground tubers that can be lifted and stored during winter dormancy.
  • Toxicity: Contains calcium oxalate crystals, making all parts poisonous if ingested; keep away from pets and children.

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight and thrives in shaded areas — perfect for shade gardens.
  • Water: Requires well-drained soil and consistent moisture during the growing season.
  • Dormancy: In winter, leaves naturally yellow and die back as the plant enters dormancy.
