Costus

Costus, also known as Kuth or Indian costus, refers to a genus of plants (Dolomiaea costus and Costus) that are used in traditional medicine for their anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcer properties. The plant is a hairy perennial herb with a stout stem, large leaves, and distinctive round, blue-purple to black flowers, with its thick, dark roots being the most valued part. It is native to the Himalayan region and is critically endangered due to high demand and unscientific harvesting.

Costus Plant – Botanical Characteristics

  • Appearance: Perennial herb with a thick, stout stem, typically 1–2 meters tall.
  • Leaves: Large, unevenly toothed; lower leaves long and winged, upper leaves smaller.
  • Flowers: Distinctive round, hard, bluish-purple to black blooms.
  • Roots: Thick, dark brown or grey, up to 40 cm long.

Medicinal Uses

  • Traditional Medicine: Used for asthma, inflammation, ulcers, and stomach ailments.
  • Active Compounds: Contains sesquiterpene lactones such as costunolide, dehydrocostus lactone, and cynaropicrin with anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties.

  • Critically Endangered: Escalating demand and unscientific harvesting threaten its survival in the wild.
